Wild Coast Sun is playing host to the first annual Umsimelelo Schools Art Festival towards the end of this month.

Presented by Dynamic Art Creative Space and funded by the National Art Council (PESP4), the art festival will see schools from the Alfred Nzo and OR Tambo districts showcasing their talents with their sights set on being crowned the best.

Up to now, the schools have been competing in community halls within the local municipalities, and the top seven schools have been selected to compete in the finals taking place at Wild Coast Sun on Saturday, 28 October 2023.

Adjudicators Akhona Ndlovu, Velile Makhoba and Othembela Nomgca will be appraising the performances of: Zibokwana SSS, Rode SSS, Langa High School, Hlomendlini JSS, Polokong JSS, Tokozani JSS, and Mzamba Comprehensive High School.

According to Xola Mziwakhe from Dynamic Art Creative Space: This initiative is motivated by the lack of opportunities for schools to showcase their performing arts skills and the lack of knowledge on what to do if they want to make career in the creative and cultural industry.

Youth from the community are also being employed to work at the event as ushers and stagehands.

“We are eager to welcome the young talent to Wild Coast Sun, because we have a longstanding commitment to uplifting communities with the inclusion of arts and culture. Some of our regular performers have been part of such campaigns and initiatives,” said Peter Tshidi, General Manager of the Resort.
