Thursday, 27 May 2021 – #NotInMyName has welcomed the sentence handed down by Judge Joseph Masupa at Pretoria High Court to serial rapist Sello Abraham Maponya today.
Maponya was sentenced to 988 years and five life imprisonment after he was found guilty of 32 counts of rape, 40 robberies and housebreaking.
Maponya committed these offences from 2014 and until he was subsequently arrested on 20 March 2019.
“We are thankful that this criminal has been given 988 years and four life sentences. We want to thank the honourable court for doing the right thing. South Africa continues to be faced with the scourge of GBV and is known as the rape capital of the world. It is only sentences like this that will deter would be perpetrators from continuing with their evil actions,” said Secretary-General Themba Masango.
