DESCRIPTION: Lesedi la Batho (meaning “light for the people”) is a faith-based NGO operating a multi-faceted community centre in the Mabopane township, 40km north of Pretoria, since March 2011. Our mission is to uplift, equip and empower vulnerable women and youth to improve their lives and become independent of handouts.
Our free community services include:
– 3 month skills training in Computer Literacy, Sewing & Beading, Cashier & Merchandising & Life Skills (+-1200 trainings completed annually)
– Job placement assistance programs (1000+ people placed in employment since 2011)
– Small business development (30+ small businesses successfully launched)
– Ikemele Women Empowerment Project, a 6-month sponsorship program providing skills training, counselling & practical support to survivors of gender-based violence (GBV)
– Community support & outreach: social relief (food parcels, building homes, goods donations), referrals to support services, group & one-on-one counselling for vulnerable groups, home based care
– Preventative education & human rights programs in the 10 local primary and high schools (+- 6000 learners annually)
– Lesedi Strikers Ladies FC: a semi-professional soccer team as a platform to pro-actively intervene in the lives of young women, providing life skills education, sports training & access to life-changing opportunities through the sport
– Ratanang Day Care Centre, a free ECD centre enabling young mothers to finish their school, attend our skills training or seek work
