With the youth unemployment rate being at 55% in South Africa, contributions by companies to reduce the rate and combat unemployment are something to be celebrated. Fabchem Mining (Pty) Ltd, a support solution company to the mining and civil industries, is one to be celebrated as they make a huge impact in developing the youth of our country.

In August 2016, they launched “Fabchem Mining Finance Internship Programme” which is still running till today. The internship programme is targeted at youth between the ages of 21 and 25. This programme, above all is aimed at contributing to the interns personal and academic growth, improve their character, self-esteem, financial status, communication skills; help them acquire various new business skills and give them a strong foundation to grow their careers.

They are proud to mention that since the programme started it has absorbed 100% of the interns, offering them permanent employment. 30% have been promoted to supervisory roles within the group and 67% of the finance department staff are from the programme.

They transformed the young interns from lack of confidence and not understanding the link between academic and practical work to young adults with a more positive outlook on the future and an improved self-esteem. This is definitely what we need for the youth of South Africa in order to grow our economy.

They will soon be launching, in partnership with Ekurhuleni East TVET College, Enterprise Development Programme meant to mentor students on becoming their companies suppliers.

The Group Head of Finance, Mr Alfred Maphosa, encourages the youth to work hard and focus on their education. “South Africa and the world offer unlimited opportunities for growth and rewards. Those opportunities will require education. Work hard now and enjoy the fruits of your success the rest of your life,” he added.
