This Mandela Day, Carnival City donated R12 500 towards the purchase of non-perishable foods for NPO Rise Against Hunger (RAH). On the day, one team of 18 volunteers from Carnival City travelled through to the food packing event at Midrand while another team from Carnival City and the Afrisun Trust visited the Impumelelo Home for Quadriplegics.

The home, which is located in Pollack Park in Springs, currently looks after seven permanent residents who come from as far afield as Limpopo and Mpumalanga. The team donated blankets, and linen from the Carnival City Hotel, while Rocco Mamas provided burgers, chips and cool drinks to make the say special.

The day after Mandela Day the team also visited the Bophelo Impilo Community School in Mayfair Johannesburg, which provides an education and boarding for underprivileged children from Grade 0 to Grade 12. The Carnival City IT department donated five pre-used computers along with linen from the Carnival City hotel.

The school was founded by Gibson Thula, the late CEO of the Afrisun Trust, to provide education to students whose parents cannot afford to pay fees. Today the school serves over 200 students with the help of 37 educators and four student teachers from the University of the Witwatersrand. The school offers separate dormitories for boys and girls.

New Carnival City General Manager Bryan O’Connor said, “I’m proud of the staff for volunteering to participate in so many initiatives on Mandela Day. I know that Madiba would approve”.
