22 schools from Mitchells Plain and the Cape Flats to take part in
Next Generation Talent showcase with R 60 000 cash to be won by schools

Cape Town, 26 September 2024: The Liberty Promenade Next Generation Musical Showcase returns this spring, having attracted a record-breaking number of participating schools with a powerful theme that speaks directly to the digital age. On Saturday, 19 October 2024, 22 schools from Mitchells Plain and the Cape Flats will come together to showcase their talents in what has become one of the most anticipated events on the Western Cape’s school calendar.

This year, the competition welcomes one more school than last year, setting a new record for participation. Learners from primary, high, and special needs schools will compete in a vibrant display of dancing, singing, music, rap, and other creative performances, all vying for a share of over R60,000 in cash prizes. These funds will provide support to the winning schools to upgrade their facilities and purchase much-needed educational resources. In addition to the school prizes, selected learners and teachers will also receive special prizes for extraordinary contributions to the showcase.

Now in its 13th year, the Next Generation Musical Showcase has solidified its place as an event that not only celebrates young talent but also gives learners the opportunity to express their views on current social issues, in a positive way. This year’s theme, “Stay Safe in Cyberspace,” encourages youth to unpack the positives and pitfalls of social media and the digital realm. Through their performances, learners will raise awareness about important online safety practices, teaching their peers to limit screen time, think before clicking, be mindful of hurtful comments, keep personal information private, and think critically before sharing, as not everything online is true.

The participating schools include Alpine Primary, Beacon School for LSEN, Cascade Primary, Caradale Primary, Eastville Primary, Eisleben Road Primary, Highlands Primary, Hyacinth Primary, Imperial Primary, Intshayelelo Primary, Jamaica Way Primary, Lentegeur School for LSEN, Tafelsig Primary, West End Primary, Woodville Primary, Cedar High, Mondale High, Portland High, Rocklands High, Spine Road High, Tafelsig High, and Westridge High Schools. The excitement is already mounting as the participating schools prepare to put their best foot forward in this year’s showcase.

To amplify the messaging and convey visual expression, learners will dress up as their favourite emojis or social media icons. Additionally, they are creating posters that will be displayed throughout the mall, providing added exposure and raising public awareness about the importance of online safety.

The panel of judges at the event will evaluate the performances and select the top schools based on the established entry criteria. There is no cost to attend the event, but spectators are encouraged to arrive early as the start time is 11am.
