As part of the Clean a River initiative and in line with its global commitment to realise a sustainable future, Acer participated in a river clean-up event with the Fountain River Environmental Sanctuary Hennops (Fresh NGO).
The clean-up took place on 13 October 2022 along the Olifantsfontein River, which forms part of the Hennops River and runs from the Tembisa area in a northerly direction. It was attended by members of the Acer Africa team, and representatives and volunteers from the non-profit organisation.
“We are especially grateful to Acer for their support in this very important endeavour,” said Willem Snyman of Fresh NGO. “Rivers form the backbone of our natural environment, and it is essential that we make every effort to keep them as clean and devoid of litter as possible.”
Keeping South Africa’s rivers clean
Fresh NGO was established to remove pollution and maintain the ecosystem of the Hennops River, which forms an important of the protected Magalies Biosphere. The organisation is committed to protecting the biodiversity of this important natural landmark while also providing essential river security and management services.
Acer’s involvement with the Clean a River campaign is the latest in the electronics manufacturer’s line of corporate social investment (CSI) initiatives that aim to assist South Africans in need and put the spotlight on environmental challenges.
“We have made it a priority to give back to nature,” said Bobbi Nyamane Marketing Lead at Acer Africa. “We have a corporate responsibility to take care of our environment & ecosystem, and with the help of Fresh NGO, we are bridging the gap between environmental issues and technology that reflects the clean and green world we want to live in and leave behind.”
“Going forward, we shall continue with clean-up events in different areas in 2023. By working hard and improving the conditions of our wetlands, we can purify this essential resource and reduce the impact of pollution on our ecosystems,” Nyamane concluded.
Sustainable technology
Acer has incorporated several design and production methods that not only aim to lower its carbon footprint but also promote sustainable and environmentally positive business practices.
Its range of Acer Vero devices are made with sustainable materials such as post-consumer recycled (PCR) and ocean-bound plastics, and can be recycled at the end of their use period. Acer products also feature packaging design that uses minimal and environmentally friendly materials, such as recycled paper and post-industrial recycle (PIR) polyester.
In 2017, Acer launched its Project Humanity initiative to promote positive environmental change, sustainability, and education. To date, the company has reduced its CO2 output by 60 tons, recycled more than 20 metric tons of batteries, and shipped more than 8.8 million products that use PCR plastic.
