Applying for jobs is easy, the hard part is continuing to apply and not receiving any response. It is important to learn how to get your CV noticed and in this blog post we cover that:

  • Be sure you are qualified for the job

The closer a match your resume is to the job qualifications, the better your chance of getting selected for an interview. Make a list of the qualifications the employer wants, and then be sure to include as many as possible in your resume.

  • Personalise your CV

Customising/personalising your resume to the job is the first step toward convincing the hiring manager that you are exactly who they’re looking for. Hiring managers connect more with personalised CV’s

  • Add a Cover Letter

The cover letter gives you the opportunity to elaborate on your story before getting the chance to interview with the hiring manager. While you get the chance to exhibit your qualifications for the job and explain what makes you a good fit, an employer gets to know more about your current situation.

  • Do your research

In order to write a good cover letter and have your CV perfectly tailored for the company, you need to first know who they are.

Do your research on the company you want to work for and then blow them away with your CV and Cover Letter.

  • Share your accomplishments

A long list of responsibilities doesn’t grab anybody’s attention. What recruiters and hiring managers want to know is how you contribute to your organisation, how you show initiative, how you really add value. In other words, they want to see how — by performing your duties — you have made a positive impact.

  • List only relevant responsibilities

When it comes to previous responsibilities, employers are only interested in the responsibilities you will also be filling in their company. The job advert would have listed these responsibilities and your duty in listing them is to show them you are who they are looking for by listing previous experience in those responsibilities.

  • Include all relevant skills

Review the job description in detail and highlight the core skills required for the role at hand. Add all relevant must-have (and nice-to-have) skills from the job description to the “Skills” section of your resume, if you possess these skills.

It makes the hiring manager realise that you are the person the company is looking for and call you in for an interview.

  • Be concise

Most companies simply don’t have the manpower or the time to read through every CV thoroughly when they are in the first stages of narrowing down the applications. Therefore, it is important to stick to the most important points to ensure your CV does not get tossed aside for having too much (irrelevant) information.

  • Check for typos

Typos are often interpreted as poor attention to detail. This works against you.

  • Save it as PDF

If you save your resume as a PDF, you won’t have to worry about funky formatting or the recruiter seeing a garbled mess. Unless the employer requires a different format, send a PDF so readers can view your resume exactly as you want it to look.
