Greenpeace Africa Board of Directors is looking for two exceptional candidates who are motivated and entrepreneurial to serve as Board Members. Successful candidates will be elected at the Annual General meeting in the first quarter of 2023.

Greenpeace is an International NGO founded in 1971, when a small boat of volunteers and journalists sailed into Amchitka, an area north of Alaska where the US government was conducting underground nuclear tests. It was an act of rebellion against seemingly impossible odds. Greenpeace Africa became a registered NGO in 2008. The Head Office is in South Africa and registered Hubs in Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon and Senegal.

We seek candidates with proven track record of Board or Senior Management experience,strong experience in the region and with a commitment to our vision and values. In addition to the above mentioned skills, please note that GPAF will give due preference to candidates who will provide gender, age, race, ethnic and geographical diversity. Current Greenpeace Africa Board Member Profile: 

The Greenpeace Africa Board currently consists of three Board Members, these members bring a range of skills and experiences to the board and in particular international communications, Human Resources, Conflict resolution and peace building, Human Resources, financial strategy and organisational development.

In order to create a highly functioning board, Greenpeace Africa strives to achieve the right mix of competencies. Reviewing the current GP Africa Board composition, as well as the upcoming organizational and environmental challenges, has led us to identify the following areas of experience/expertise as critical.

  • Programming and Campaigning
  • Governance and Legal
  • Fundraising and Supporter base building

Essential Criteria

Mission Relevant Knowledge and Expertise: 

  • Possession of principles and integrity in alignment with Greenpeace’s values, including a clear understanding of JEDIS principles (Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Safety).
  • Strong leadership skills with a demonstrated commitment in grounding African consciousness. Knowledge and experience in addressing  the effects of climate change,  protecting natural resources and the environment, movement/ coalition building, regional policy influencing and knowledge of environmental politics in the continent will be an added asset.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of the INGO and NGO sectors and a profound understanding of the environmental challenges faced by the peoples of Africa.
  • Candidates with backgrounds in advocacy areas such as human rights, labour unions, social justice, etc are encouraged to apply.

Governance, Oversight and Work Capacity

  • Evidence of positive and strong Governance, Management experience, preferably in a complex multi-cultural global organization.
  • Evidence of understanding and practice of organizational strategic planning.
  • A broader risk thinker with the ability to systematically monitor the risk situation of the organisation, understand and influence the organisational risk appetite particularly in the context of taking deliberate, managed, strategic risks to achieve campaigning or organizational objectives.
  • Candidates must not only have the time to serve but a flexible schedule allowing for, face to face Board meetings, travel, emails response  conference calls and video conferences, possibly at non-business hours to accommodate board members’ various time zones.
  • Fluency in English is required, Fluency in French and other African languages will be an added advantage.

Additional Criteria:

  • Independence: Since the Board is the guarantor of the integrity of the organisation and must be perceived as such by supporters, the public, and staff, Board Members should be clearly independent from Greenpeace’s internal affairs, having no vested interest which might be in conflict with Greenpeace’s interests and objectives.
  • Expertise: Board Members should be distinguished in their recognised fields and elected for their expertise and attainments.
  • Diversity: Board candidates shall not be discriminated against based on gender, race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, faith, or any other aspect of their being.
  • International Experience: So as to better reflect Greenpeace’s global mission, Board Members should bring to the national/regional Board an international perspective. Experience working / serving in governance bodies in the Global South will be an added advantage.
